  Juntar no São Luiz, a cada duas semanas, uma comunidade de leitores. Abordar, como se fôssemos piratas, um texto monumental que vai demorar cento e vinte e seis sessões a ler. Ou seja, um projecto que sabemos quando começa mas ainda não sabemos, nem queremos, quando acaba. Um gesto que sussurrará permanentemente um sub-texto que nos faz bem ouvir. Para nos lembrarmos de como somos frágeis e também fortes, de como é a nossa errância que produz as ficções com que nos enchemos de bravura ou paixão. Para nos lembrarmos das interrogações universais que levantamos a cada passo que damos.

Programar a leitura integral do Dom Quixote de la Mancha é, evidentemente, quixotesco. Por isso mesmo, nada poderia fazer mais sentido. Neste momento, como de resto em qualquer outro, porque na realidade estamos sempre no tempo do Quixote. Assim sendo, lá iremos espetar-nos contra os seus cento e vinte e seis capítulos, como se de moinhos de palavras se tratassem. Os leitores serão muitos, tantos que ainda nem sabemos exactamente quantos. Começaremos por dois: José Luís Ferreira e Alínea Berlitz Iissilva. É que, aos três juntos, pode-se-nos responsabilizar, quando não culpabilizar, por ter tido esta ideia. O mesmo vale para os comentadores – dos quais, como podeis ver, sou eu já o primeiro – mas que serão também aos montes e variadíssimos, como os leitores. E acredite-se, vai ser divertido. Divertidíssimo, diria! Porque o Quixote é um livro muitíssimo divertido. E diverso. Tanto, que iremos desbravando caminho e temas, sem nos fixarmos numa direcção precisa – como, por acaso, ele mesmo fez ao deixar o seu cavalo, Rocinante, livre de escolher o rumo de suas andanças. Além das surpresas que da leitura virão, teremos outras… Já que não só de ler se trata, mas também de falar, comentar, discutir, pôr em relação, fazer música, teatro e até passar filmes e tudo o mais. É que, em definitivo, o mundo do Quixote não encerra em si o Mundo, ultrapassa-o.

  Sony today announced the launch of the lightest touch screen 6" eReader device ever, Reader Wi-Fi (PRS-T1), providing the most natural and immersive reading experience yet for book lovers. The new Reader Wi-Fi builds on the popularity of last year's line, while reducing size and weight and incorporating new and enhanced features. At under 6 ounces and with a 6" E-Ink® Pearl V220 touch screen, Reader Wi-Fi is smaller than an average paperback book, can easily fit into a bag or pocket and is available in three color choices: black, red or white.

Amazon Just Launched their own PDF Format

  Alongside Kindle (AZW) and Kindle (Topaz), Amazon now sell “print replica” ebooks. This is a completely new format and you need to update to the latest version of K4PC in order to use it.  (It’s also US only, darnit.) If you read the help pages, it sounds like Amazon have created a format that is something like PDF.

Difference Engine: Reality dawns

  You only have to look at the numbers. Apple’s share of the tablet market is over 61% and growing, while all the Android tablets together make up barely 30% and are being squeezed. According to Strategy Analytics of Newton, Massachusetts, Windows tablets account for 4.6% and Research in Motion’s 3.3%. Sooner or later, the rest of the iPad wannabes are going to realise that, just because Apple has a runaway success on its hands, they cannot charge Apple prices for their hastily developed me-too products and expect consumers to clamour for them.

The death of books has been greatly exaggerated

  What does all this data add up to? Hardly an industry in its death throes, so one must ask why there are so many long faces about the place. Let's not be naive. These are times of massive change, and change is never, ever comfortable. The retail sector worries publishers and authors alike; in the past year, publishers have lost Woolworth, Borders and British Bookshops as sales channels and, as Kate Pool from the Society of Authors says: "The increasing dominance of Amazon (as retailer, increasingly as publisher, as owner of the Kindle, etc) is potentially very worrying."

New @author Kindle Feature lets you Pester the Author from inside the Ebook

  How would you like to ask the author a question about the book while you’re reading it? You’re going to need a Twitter account (and a participating author), but  now you can.

Simply open the Kindle ebook (it has to be one Amazon sold you), highlight a passage and type @author and your question. If you’re following the author on kindle.amazon.com, the question and the author’s answer will both become Public Notes in your book. The question and answer will also be visible on the author’s page on kindle.amazon.com.

Why Spanish Publishing is the Next Digital Battleground

  Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world after English and Chinese, and the revenue potential from a market made of 500 million Spanish speakers will not be overlooked. As we all know, the Internet has no frontiers and, therefore, once the English content market consolidates, the main international players will enrich their catalogs with content from other potential markets, especially the Spanish one. Barnes & Noble has already initiated this race towards globalization by aggregating more than 40,000 Spanish titles from various Spanish and Latin American publishers and offering them for sale online — an approach that will soon be imitated by the rest of the international players.

Advertising in Ebooks: Heresy or Genius?

  According to a recent survey of 600 publishers across the trade, professional, and educational markets, the biggest struggle publishers face is maximizing ebook profits as the industry struggles to go digital. Part of the profit problem will be solved as publishers reduce production expenses by moving to scalable digital workflows, rather than retrofitting existing, outdated and inefficient publishing processes. While saving money by increasing productivity and reducing expenses is an important part of gaining a positive return on investment from ebooks and apps, maximizing profits also requires publishers to find innovative ways of earning revenue and turning those dollars into profit.

Amazon continues on its mission to disintermediate publishers

  What if you could ask the author of a book a question while you were reading the book? That’s the kind of world Amazon wants to offer with its new @author feature, which the online bookstore launched on Wednesday with a group of writers including Susan Orlean and self-help guru Tim Ferriss. Readers can ask questions directly from their Kindles while they are reading a book, and the question gets sent to the author’s Twitter account as well as to their home page at Amazon. In addition to creating what the company hopes will be a kind of reader community around Kindle titles — something it has been pushing in other ways as well — this new feature looks like another step in Amazon’s quest to cut publishers out of the equation and build relationships directly with authors.

New NookColor coming in September

  Our good friends at Digitimes have picked up on new orders from Barnes & Noble.  They’re getting hints that Barnes & Noble are about to release a new ebook reader and that it’s supposed to be announced soon. According to their sources the NC2 is going to be another 7″ model with a number of details in common with the current NookColor.

Amazon’s Kindle Tablet Is Very Real. I’ve Seen It, Played With It.

  It’s called simply the “Amazon Kindle”. But it’s not like any Kindle you’ve seen before. It displays content in full color. It has a 7-inch capacitive touch screen. And it runs Android.

Rumors of Amazon making a full-fledged tablet device have persisted for a while. I believe we were one of the first to report on the possibility from a credible source — the same person who accurately called Amazon’s Android Appstore. That source was dead-on again, it just took Amazon longer than anticipated to get the device ready to go. They’re now close.

The Dog-Eared Paperback, Newly Endangered in an E-Book Age

  A comprehensive survey released last month by the Association of American Publishers and the Book Industry Study Group revealed that while the publishing industry had expanded over all, publishers’ mass-market paperback sales had fallen 14 percent since 2008.

“Five years ago, it was a robust market,” said David Gernert, a literary agent whose clients include John Grisham, a perennial best seller in mass market. “Now it’s on the wane, and e-books have bitten a big chunk out of it.”

Ler em Lisboa: Biblioteca Municipal de Belém

A Biblioteca Municipal de Belém encontra-se instalada no Palácio Angeja, edifício setecentista situado na Rua da Junqueira. Mandado construir por D. Pedro José de Noronha após o devastador terramoto de 1755, o Palácio passou por diversas fases, tendo sido convertido em prédio de rendimento em 1910 (destacando-se Almeida Garret entre os moradores que albergou) e, posteriormente, num colégio reservado aos familiares de pescadores de uma frota bacalhoeira. Em 1962 é adquirido pela Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, sendo a biblioteca inaugurada a 11 de Junho de 1965, mantendo-se em actividade até aos dias de hoje.

A biblioteca ocupa os dois pisos do Palácio, estando o piso térreo reservado às secções Infanto-Juvenil e Multimédia, assim como para as exposições temporárias, enquanto que no 1.º piso se encontra o sector dedicado aos adultos, uma sala de periódicos e um agradável terraço com vista para o rio Tejo.

Entre 1969 e 1975, a RTP apresentou um programa semanal, que em 1974 passou a quinzenal, com o título Se bem me lembro. Durante cerca de meia hora, em horário nobre, os portugueses deixavam, encantados, o Professor. Vitorino Nemésio abrir-lhes as fronteiras da Cultura e do Conhecimento.

Sabiam que era açoriano, professor universitário e escritor, e alguns talvez soubessem que tinha escrito o romance Mau Tempo no Canal. Pouco mais. Vitorino Nemésio tinha o mundo dentro de si e era de todo o mundo. Mas, isolado de qualquer grupo, o mundo não o chegou a conhecer.

Vinte anos depois da sua morte, o documentário Vitorino Nemésio - VIAGEM aborda a personalidade única que foi Vitorino Nemésio, dentro da cultura portuguesa: escritor, professor, ensaísta, jornalista, comunicador. Mas, acima de tudo, poeta. E Homem.

Escrita ao longo de mais de 30 anos e quase interrompida pelo grave acidente que King sofreu em 1999, a saga The Dark Tower, ao contrário de outros livros mais conhecidos do autor, é uma obra de difícil categorização, apresentando elementos característicos de géneros como a ficção científica, o horror, o fantástico e o western. Apesar de se tratar de uma definição redutora, The Gunslinger apresenta-se, essencialmente, como um misto dos dois últimos; um primeiro passo naquele que é talvez o projecto mais ambicioso na carreira de Stephen King.

  "The desert was the apotheosis of all deserts, huge, standing to the sky for what looked like eternity in all directions. It was white and blinding and waterless and without feature save for the faint, cloudy haze of the mountains which sketched themselves on the horizon and the devil-grass which brought sweet dreams, nightmares, death. An occasional tombstone sign pointed the way, for once the drifted track that cut its way through the thick crust of alkali had been a highway. Coaches and buckas had followed it. The world had moved on since then. The world had emptied."

Neste primeiro volume aguarda-nos um cenário apocalíptico, onde se vislumbram ainda alguns resquícios do mundo tal como o conhecemos, muito embora não passem de ecos distantes, relíquias do passado.

Sobre o solo estéril do deserto caminha Roland Deschain, último sobrevivente de uma linhagem de pistoleiros, perseguindo um misterioso homem de negro, elusiva figura que Roland considera ser uma peça fulcral na sua busca pela Torre.

  ‘Why am I here?’ Jake asked. ‘Why did I forget everything from before?’

‘Because the man in black has drawn you here,’ the gunslinger said. ‘And because of the Tower. The Tower stands at a kind of… power-nexus. In time.’

‘I don’t understand that!’

‘Nor do I,’ the gunslinger said. ‘But something has been happening. Just in my own time. “The world as moved on,” we’ve always said. But it’s moving on faster now. Something has happened to time. It’s softening.’

O mundo de Roland entrou numa espiral de decadência que afecta até as próprias leis da física. Convicto de que a única forma de compreender e reverter a enigmática degradação reside na Torre, Roland está disposto a enfrentar quaisquer dificuldades para a alcançar, confiando para tal nos seus instintos e na sua proficiência com as armas. De resto, a descrição da agilidade do pistoleiro é captivante, demonstrando ao mesmo tempo o forte controlo que Roland exerce sobre as suas emoções. E, apesar das incógnitas contidas em The Gunslinger, o livro acaba por se focar neste homem capaz de prosseguir perante as adversidades, inabalável nas suas convicções; uma personagem forte e carismática à altura do desafiante caminho que aguarda todos os que procuram a Torre.

  "The guns were empty and they boiled at him, transmogrified into an Eye and a Hand, and he stood, screaming and reloading, his mind far away and absent, letting his hands do their reloading trick. Could he hold up a hand, tell them he had spent a thousand years learning this trick and others, tell them of the guns and the blood that had blessed them? Not with his mouth. But his hands could speak their own tale."

Em The Gunslinger, King consegue introduzir eficazmente o complexo universo que criou, sem submergir o leitor numa quantidade de informação que lhe é dispensável. A fusão das evidentes (e assumidas) influências e a inteligente gestão de elementos de diferentes géneros revelam uma nova face do autor que, com o estilo que lhe é característico, concede a este trabalho uma personalidade própria e incita o leitor a embarcar na aventura de Roland Deschain, entrando numa realidade que se poderá revelar assustadoramente familiar.

 “There was a time, yet a hundred generations before the world moved on, when mankind had achieved enough technical and scientific prowess to chip a few splinters from the great stone pillar of reality.

(…) But this wealth of information produced little or no insight. There were no great odes written to the wonders of artificial insemination – having babies from frozen mansperm – or to the cars that ran on power from the sun. Few if any seemed to have grasped the truest principle of reality: new knowledge leads always to yet more awesome mysteries.”
